We recently spent 3 weeks in Tehuacan. Tehuacan is a small city located in the state of Puebla in Mexico. It is not touristy at all. I loved this little city because we got a true taste of Mexican culture and it's people.

We felt very safe in Tehuacan. It was very easy to take the public bus, called locally, the Combi. Each one lists where it goes on the front windshield. Usually with the company logo. So it was easy to look and see Walmart or whatever we wanted. If not we asked if it passed for where we wanted. The drivers are great! The fare of the bus is posted inside the bus with was nice to know that we were paying a fair price.

Taxis in town are 50 pesos anywhere in town pretty much, unless its really far out.

Market day is Saturday and everyone is selling something on every piece of sidewalk around town. As well most people are out buying what they need for the week.

1. Club de Animalitos: We paid 50 pesos for 2 adults and 2 children to go to this little zoo located right in town. There was a large selection of animals located at the zoo. The kids' highlight of the visit was when a staff member gave us two bunches of mini bananas to feed the monkeys. It was pretty comical to see how the monkeys work to out smart one another to get the most bananas.

2. Museo de la Evolucion: I don't know what the entry fee is because the museum is FREE on Tuesdays. We only went on Tuesdays when it was free! There is a large dinosaur exhibit area in the museum. My dinosaur loved exploring the 3 levels of the dinosaur exhibit. There is a large rock exhibit, which the kids enjoyed seeing.

3. Central Park: Be sure to go to Central Park in the evening on the weekends. This is the place that the locals go to hang out and gather. There are street performers, people who will bless you if that is your thing, vendors selling all kinds of things and electric cars and bikes for the kids to ride around the park for a few pesos. My boys enjoyed feeding the pigeons and chasing the birds.

4. Aztec Ruins at Old Tehuacan: The park is free to enter. There is a museum with artifacts that have been taken from the ruins and preserved. At different areas there are photos of the items in the museum to indicate where each piece was found. The kids enjoyed walking around and exploring the ruins. We talked about who might live there! We did have to pay a taxi to take us out there and also get the Taxi driver's number to come get us to go back because there are no taxi's at the ruins. It's pretty desolate up there. Its quite a ways up a hill on a windy road to get there.

5. Balneario San Lorenzo: Entrance is 40 pesos for adults and 20 pesos for kids. There are change rooms, showers and bathrooms there. There is a small concession stand that sells drinks, including beer, and snacks. There are tables and chairs to sit at and eat and keep your things at. There are two shallow pools with water slides for kids. There are several deep pools that are natural mineral water. There is a small play ground and park area in behind the pool areas. As well as another pool in the back. You could easily spend all day here. To get here take a Combi bus with MANANTIALES on the front.

6. San Lorenzo Park: A nice small clean park. Shady places to sit. A store is close by to get a snack. There are adult exercise areas and kids playground in the same area. To get here take the Combi bus with Manantiales on the front.

7. Splash Aquatic Park: I can't actually give a good review of this place because the day we went to go here, it was closed for a private event. However from what we could see at the front gate, it looked pretty impressive. Take any Combi bus that says SAN LORENZO on the front.

Market Street: Tehuacan has a few streets down in the centre that are only for walking and its like a giant market down there. We went one Saturday evening and it was such an experience. It felt like the entire town was out! It is great because no one is hounding you to buy anything. They just smile as you walk by!
